I found myself with a minute to reflect, so here we are. When we decided to move to Arizona, Nate said it was like stacking logs. Each worry, each task, each seemingly surmountable item just kept stacking up. I woke up one morning worried about where I would find dog food! We hear our Corning house is closing today at 5. I know I will breath easier now that it's behind us and we are moving on to the next log to throw on the fire!

Closing here is yet to be scheduled but it's eminent. Which means we get to leave the Faux House that we are short term renting behind. I won't miss it. It's a sad house that needs some love. The mattress is slightly better than sleeping on the floor, the shower is tepid, and birds are trying to break into the "attic" manically. It's certainly better than a hotel, although the ice maker there would probably work. I cannot imagine trying to do this on our own though, so there is that! Thankfully this is a relo!

Looking forward to settling all the things at the end of this week. I won't lie though. Nate told me that one person lost all their cookware in their move. So now I am worried about my pots and pans. What would be helpful would be if they lost the Christmas tree that probably shouldn't have been moved as I cut all the lights off it the year before and it lost half it's fake snow. Do you put up trees with fake snow in Arizona? Yet another one of my many questions!

What I am most looking forward to is planting a few bulbs I brought with me from NY. They have sprouted and are looking for a good home in the soil. I think they will go up front near the roses. I heard they don't have squirrels here so we might be in good shape for them making it to spring! Suppose that is all anyone could ask. Just for a bit of dirt and a chance to bloom.

Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-74410833190247224132020-08-30T08:53:00.000-04:002020-08-30T08:53:11.979-04:00The Pink (Gate) House of Poughkeepsie & Winifred Pleninger

This past summer to occupy ourselves, the kids and I schlepped to various thrift stores. I mean, not too many were local due to Covid, but we managed to find a couple an hour away that were fun. In Ithaca, NY they have a several called the ReUse store and this is where we found this beauty. It's a rather well done water color and certainly caught my eye for $10. The painting itself was slipping down so it was rather hard to even tell that it was signed. Frame was in excellent shape, but what really caught my eye was the pink gingerbread house in the wintertime.

Since the walls here at Pratt Inc. are pretty much full, I wasn't sure why I had actually bought it. A snippet of newspaper on the back had caught my eye and I'm a sucker for good art AND a good story. Bought it home, cleaned it up, and discovered that Win Pleninger had painted it. My quick google searches really turned up nothing....although I had some good key words to use....

Here is the clue I had to work with.

With that little clue photographed, I turned to the internet. In particular a Facebook Group that I like a lot: Weird Second Hand Finds that Just Need to be Shared. The internet did not disappoint. Within a half hour I had quite a story. Check out what the New York Times has to say about the Pink House in 1976.

These days a new road would mean a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) review. You'd have to submit your project to SHPO and see if they allowed you to tear it down. I cannot envision that they'd be on board with tearing down a historic structure without moving it, changing where the highway is going or at least a year's worth of work to analyze the project every single which way to Sunday. I guess we all hate red tape, but at the risk of losing things that are important, a little red tape will save regrets later on. I guess it's kinda cool that 40 years later we have a process to make sure the things we love hang around a little longer.

The Weird Second Hand Finds group also turned up a link to the Poughkeepsie Historic Preservation Office on Facebook who posted some cool photos of this house back in the day and a lot more info!

Needless to say, Poughkeepsie does not have this pink house any longer. It's a sad story and one that was probably repeated at least a couple of times in various places in New York. My daughter and I agreed at this point that obviously saving this painting was the best way was to give it back to the City of Poughkeepsie. So, we contacted the lady who was tending the Facebook Group and said listen, we have this painting we really know nothing about. Are you interested? The answer was maybe, because who knew who Win Pleninger was? So, she did some digging and it turns out that she was really Winifred Pleninger and was a local artist. It's possible she even painted the house in real life before it was torn down. (Insert Cold Chills here!)

Now, the answer was a resounding YES! She would find a home for this painting. Keep in mind that this literally was a $10 purchase! Lexi is going to college near Poughkeepsie, so we met up with the Historic Preservation lady the day Lexi moved back in. It was hard to have a meaningful conversation with masks and social distancing, but I felt confident that good things would come of this exchange.

Just got the email earlier this past week. This painting has been accepted at the Clinton House! Lexi and I are beyond thrilled and can't wait to visit if it's installed! Generally speaking, junking isn't always this exciting, but I'm so happy we got this painting somewhere that others can enjoy it and better yet tell the story about Historic Preservation.
Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-92200940333123367642020-08-28T07:47:00.001-04:002020-08-28T07:47:12.581-04:00His Future is In The Air

Sometimes when life hands you lemons, you decide to spend your summer in the air. Three blisters, some oddly placed bruises, and some bad tan lines are the physical results left on my body from four days spent working from 7 am to 8 pm on a park build in Elmira. My heart however is full and I'm oddly satisfied.

The playground was likely built in the 1950s and it showed. I watched the demo and didn't even feel a small twinge as old metal was ripped out of the ground and carted away on a dump truck. Later when a security guard at the building adjacent to the park mentioned a kid in his building was devastated that we were taking the playground away, I felt horrible. The news that a new kick ass park was coming along was shared, but still...I wondered how many little people would look out their windows and wonder why the park was going away. The City of Elmira has a lot of parks, but only some of them were reopened due to the pandemic and this one was still closed.

By Monday, the holes for the equipment was in process. It was slow going as you had to carefully position the drill over top of the surveyed flag. The City guys had a process but with only one machine there wasn't a lot to do that could speed up things. They were still drilling holes by the time the playground guys showed up the following morning.

There was a small crew the first day. Turns out that despite the best surveying, a lot of the holes had to be redug by hand. Since there was a foundation and cobblestone street under one section, this process took longer than anticipated.

Concrete was supposed to go in on Thursday am. In actuality, it got poured Friday am. Two skid steers with huge buckets and a parade of wheelbarrows started filling in the holes. It was quite a relief as the volunteer numbers were smaller due to Covid and the extreme heat. When the driver left, he handed the invoice over. The concrete was donated!

Food and money to purchase food came from various places. Home Depot and Lowe’s gave supplies. A little old lady showed up with boxes of ice cream sandwiches and said she had worked at the the school across the street for twenty years looking at the old playground. She had tears in her eyes.

I heard that normally a playground this nice goes into an upscale neighborhood. Upscale isn’t the right term for this neighborhood. Under development might be a better term as after the new playground, a bandstand is planned as well as big changes to other not for profits in area. Exciting times ahead!

I’m off for a couple of days and will miss the last of the build. I’m a little sad as I helped install the header for the big ass slide but won’t be around for the other pieces. It’s not a small slide and there was a bit of a pucker factor! I do intend to give it a try though after it’s completed. I will be missing spreading three tractor trailer loads of wood chips though so maybe I’m not missing much!
Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-82439329956861276462020-06-28T09:43:00.001-04:002020-06-28T09:43:25.554-04:00Sparkly Bits and Die-cut Planes

It was only natural I'd spot the fluttering banner that said thrift store. I crossed paths with the banner on the way to the park where all the food trucks were. I made a promise with that banner that I'd check out the store on the way back. I was there to hand out flyers for a park that I'm involved with.

A short while later, I passed out all my flyers. Conversation was limited due to mask wearing and most of the people were happily eating their lunches. I had mistakenly packed and subsequently eaten my lunch prior so I had to skip trying Global Taco or the one called Over the Moon Grilled Cheeserie. I consoled myself with a whoopie pie and headed back the way I came with a promise that next Thursday I'd be back!

At first glance, the church basement thrift store was exactly that. I had spotted a cool vintage butterfly pin full of sparkly bits right off, but I was pretty sure my sale would be pretty small. Despite the warning that all was half off, I was less than impressed with the first two rooms. Then I came across a small collection of painted plates. Embossed gold with roses, Mine Mine Mine! Inner crow screamed with glee!

A second plate had lovely free form roses with handed painted little pretty flowers at the top. In all, my little painted plates totally made up for skipping a delicious super cheesy grilled cheese sammy. It was a nice way to slide into the weekend.

Saturday evening I had a little bit of time while waiting for fried pickles to arrive. The rest of dinner too, but specifically the fried pickles. My earlier disappointment in not having a grilled cheese off the food truck manifested itself in mac and cheese from a local place for dinner. Anyhow, while waiting, I dug out some new stamps I got that came with the ability to die cut out the pieces. I bought them after I had an on-line scrapbooking party.

Did I tell you about that? A bunch of us got on-line in the midst of the virus and scrapped via web ex. I wouldn't have known how to set up a web-ex except I was taking some on-line classes for something else and happened to have an account. So, we got to all hang out and work together. I made a sh*t-ton of background pages, which I'm likely to do when I don't have 100% concentration and just want to do something mindless. Since evidently there is a little bit of camping this summer, they will come in handy for layouts.

I made six of these cards. I only needed two, because kids are still graduating and other peeps are still retiring. Despite the bug, life events march on even it's a socially distanced graduation wearing masks and a last day of work after spending your whole life at it but skipping the get together because let's face it most peeps are still working off their kitchen table.

I am thankful that we will have a little of this and a little of that to look forward to this summer. They say it's the mask wearing which we all have gotten mostly used to, I guess which is why the numbers in my state are down. With the threat of bad things happening, I'm noticing that the majority of peeps are wearing theirs. We've had our big box home improvement store shut down twice for lack of mask wearing and one of the local bars that operates in the sticks lost their liquor license as they kept serving. I can say that perhaps some should consider running their masks through the laundry, but we've all got our personal preferences, right?

And with that, I'm off. I have my own laundry to do and left over mac and cheese for lunch to devour!

Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-26170776637139399672020-06-14T10:31:00.001-04:002020-06-14T10:31:34.563-04:00A Good Last Day

I was pleased when a couple of weeks back the owner of Costa's Flying Service told me that Lou would be Luke's CFI (Certified Flight Instructor). I've met Lou numerous times. He's flown our Civil Air Patrol Cadets at least once, not to mention he was previously in CAP. I think his membership predated the current members of our Squadron for the most part, but I knew that he and Luke would hit it off.

Well, I knew they would hit it off eventually. Although Luke is well spoken around adults and confident, he does tend to be on the shy side of things and I was pretty sure Lou also was on the quiet side. This past Friday at work I got the text message that Luke was on his way home from flying and that he had stories.

When I called on my way home to see if I could coax the stories out of him, Luke said that I had to wait for supper when we had longer to talk. He had been flying on one Cessna in particular, but they had to fly an older one for lessons on Friday as the plane Luke was used to flying had to have 100 hour maintenance done. The older plane Luke wasn't used to gave Lou and Luke a little bit of a hard time.

First the pre-flight inspection was different as items were switched around and then the headsets stopped working when they did finally get off the ground. You can't hear over the engine while flying so you can imagine there was a bit of yelling as Luke interpreted what Lou was asking him to do. After landing the first time, they were able to work the kinks out with the headsets. Despite these complications, Luke had enjoyed his time in the air and told me that he thought he and Lou were finally starting to bond. Lou had told him about his time in the Army at one point Friday. It had been a beautiful day to fly. I've been with Luke after he lands and he gets all shiny happy. I imagine Lou probably thought that was pretty cool.

Later that night I got a text message that Lou had been out walking his dog and had been found unresponsive on the sidewalk and had passed away. Luke was crushed. I'm pretty sure Luke was Lou's last lesson. At least he got to spend the day with one of the best kids I know up above the clouds. That's a good last day.

Later, I asked Luke if he could have landed if something bad had happened to Lou while they were flying. He said yes, I could have landed. It would have sucked and I probably would have wanted to stop flying for a while. However, I know what to do in an emergency. That made me feel better.

I asked him this on our way back from junkin. He had managed to score a really old CRT monitor that was small enough for his F-16 project and a handful of servos, so he was feeling the glow after a successful hunt and I thought that he might be willing to talk a little. He had initially wanted to take a week off flying, but his new flight instructor informed him that he would be back in the air on Tuesday. I think when Luke does finally solo that we'll have a quiet moment for Lou and to thank him for his last final instruction.

Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-46523567377141901062020-05-31T15:05:00.001-04:002020-05-31T15:05:33.557-04:00We're All In This Together

A friend made that super fantastic title for me the other day and I decided it needed to be the feature of this page about the award that my son received from Civil Air Patrol. I also decided to use a piece of plastic that my son gifted me after he dismantled a key board. I thought it was only fitting as the award was for the Air Force Assocation's CyberPatriot competition. They got first place in NY State for the service division and there wasn't time for the ceremony before Covid hit. He's flying these days. A scholarship from our local Experimental Aircraft Association has him lifting off a couple of times a week in hopes to obtain his solo and ultimately his private pilot's license. He's taking ground school as he goes. It's a pretty useful pursuit this summer. A summer where a job isn't a thing as the place he normally works isn't open yet and we're not even sure what phase that place will fit into or whether they will even need the extra staff.

It's good for my soul that he's getting to do something worthy. I, like every other parent on this planet during the pandemic is worried that her kids are not getting enough. We're embracing the small things here, but right now there are some fairly large things looming on the horizon that are scaring our socks off.

It's all a little too real to me at the moment. Generally speaking in our quiet little spot, democracy is something in the background. On Friday it was in my head all day. My office at work is above the police station and was one of the many places throughout the country with protesting. All day there were horns honking in support, chanting, and squealing tires. Normally I can work through just about anything but all the cacophony coming into the third story of my building was distracting. Despite my best attempts at calm (it was peaceful after all) I could not relax. By the time I got home my head was pounding. Other places aren't so lucky as we've seen fires on the news and some of those places are a short drive away.

Escape with a book, some cooking & crafting were the small things that helped bring my head back into a good spot. Add in some sunlight and a historic SpaceEx launch, I'm ready to head back into the thick of it with a little wind under my wings.

Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-82882905308391786372020-05-26T20:31:00.003-04:002020-05-26T20:31:56.454-04:00When Bad Things Happen to Good Transfers

Picked this little dresser up off Facebook Market Place. It met all of my criteria. It needed to be cheap ($35), close by, and ugly. Since it was previously white and pink and not the nice shade of pink and in my town, it all worked out. Don't believe me on the pink thing do you? Alright, hold tight.
The owner had it stored in the garage and it had kinda picked up a bit of a funk smell to it as well. The first chore was cleaning it off & spraying it with Lysol. I'm not entirely sure that actually worked or it just aired out on it's own. Anyhow, the intermediate step was to get rid of that pink which really wasn't all that easy to cover, even using gray chalk board paint.

About three coats later, it had a nice gray tone to it. Sadly the drawers weren't all that excited about closing firmly so after the paint job there was a lot of sanding to get things to fit happily back together. I then ordered the Prima Transfer "On a Voyage" from Amazon. I really was excited about the ship and the compass and I thought with the curved top it would look like a sea chest...or at least have that theme.

Since this was in the very middle of Covid, shipping of the transfer took forever and even was delayed. Finally, I got my hands on it and that very evening began working on getting it transferred onto this dresser. The first piece went on really well. The second which had the ship was horrible! I've seen transfers pick up the paint instead of transferring onto the piece, which is bad paint adhesion. This was very different. It was like the bottom layer of the transfer that was sticky went on but the top layer with the image refused to budge. I think to be honest it was old and I learned subsequently that it had been discontinued. If I had ordered from a distributor, I could have asked for a new one or at least gotten my money back. Amazon wanted the whole product back and two sections of it were already on the dresser.

I kept at it and it turned out to mainly just be the second drawer up that didn't work out so well. My options were to order another transfer and sand the drawer back down or come up with plan B. I decided I wanted roses and to make this look like the inside of a trunk. Enter a second transfer. This one was a water slide transfer and required the whole piece be mainly finished.

After a bunch of brown glaze rubbed on, gold paint dabbed in various places and then a coat of clear, I was ready for the blue rose water slide. That can be found on Ebay and was shipped super quick and worked effortlessly. It definitely made me much less sad about the places that didn't transfer so well. There is so much detail in this piece now!

I'm not sure yet what I'm doing with this piece. It's up for sale, but mainly because I made it for fun and to pass the time during the no fun Covid. Might be a donation piece, we'll see.
I was pretty emotional Mother's Day morning. NY weather had been flirting with us where one weekend I got a sunburn and the next all the plants were covered in snow and ice. I bring a lot of potted plants in for the winter and some of them have been around since my first house which is pre-kids. So, around 20 years. They had all headed back out of the heated porch and had been basking in the sun. I knew better when I heard it was getting cold, but the volume of plants to bring back inside was A LOT. Some of them really didn't look good after their cold night out in the snow and it felt like a big ole stomp on my heart on top of all the rest of the shizz going on. One cannot possibly have to deal with a virus AND snow at the same time....

I went for a drive, hid some rocks in a local park and came back home. That head clearing session did give me some perspective. I could mope the rest of the day and go to bed angry and sad, or I could rally the troops.

The troops had just gotten up. See Pratt Inc. has first shift and second shift. Second shift has just wrapped up the last semester of in person, on line, extra break weeks, messed up college. How anyone managed to get decent grades at all in such a rapidly changing messed up situation was beyond me. Both kids have taken a little time to smell the roses so to speak or in this case stay up all night playing on-line games.

Anyhow, by the time I stomped back into the house, they were all just finishing showers. An offer of Arby's for whatever meal immediately follows cereal at noon and a trip to the Buffalo farm was on the agenda with ice cream for dessert. While I was negotiating this trip out, my first visitor to the orange and grape jelly feeder arrived. He was cold too but stuck his beak into the jelly and orange like a rock star.

Add in orange birds & buffalo babies, it was a pretty rock star day. Most of the plants are recovering with one probably a goner. I'm OK with that. Shizz happens. Here's to Mother's Day 2021 with no snow and better yet no virus!
Moved the kid out of college last weekend. I do not possibly think a more f-ed up semester was had. From the week and a half off due to water issues (somebody damaged a fuel supply line accidentally which in turn ended up migrating into the Town aquifer ) to an extra week off on top of Spring Break for Covid so the teachers could transition classes to electronic, to on-line everything even finals. We signed a contract with John for a room in the Haunted Mansion on the hill for the whole semester which meant that she still had to pay rent, including this month for three days, so she headed back down after Spring Break to social distance in New Paltz. We moved her out in a cloud of pot smoke. The remaining kid in the house was smoking a bong at the time. Made me wonder if Code Enforcement should require vent fans in each room in college towns. Dear me we had quite the sore throat at the end.

Anyhow, she's back and moved in. I have passed off all my orchid duties, which was pretty extensive back to Lexi. Most of them decided to bloom so it looks like a green house in her room these days. We are all enjoying the birds at the feeder, an extra hand with the dogs, and wishing that both Pratt Inc. kids had the benefit of real college vs. this on-line mishmash that everyone is making the best of. I suppose in the scheme of things, it's not like they are in the middle off WWII after college like Grandpa Ham. Grandma Skip lost her fiance to the war and then ended up marrying a flyboy who was my Grandpa. Major life things right there that dictate the course of a life.

Anyhow, speaking of flowers, cupcakes, and art...all those little things that make your day just a little bit happier, let's talk about social media. I think the majority of us tune into places like THE BOOK as a palate cleanser, or at least I do. Being an election year here in the States I was prepared to see everything go political. Add in a Global Pandemic, we have the addition crunch of conspiracy theories, opinions, more opinions, and stupidity. At times I have found myself wondering how the particular person posting gets through their life with the serious lack of science and common sense that they are displaying by hitting share. I try to be careful what I share. For one thing, I try to read/watch/double check it all. One time I posted something about a broken window in a business, without checking to make sure it was Corning NY and not Corning, California. I was thankful somebody alerted me to the fact it wasn't local to me and I deleted the post.

It's making me increasingly angry to see all the stupidity. I've taken to actually posting content that explains why their hysterical conspiracy theory video was actually harmful. So harmful that Facebook was taking it down. One of the answers to that link was less than satisfactory, so instead of getting angry, I hit the unfriend button without remorse. A group of us came up with a good plan the other day on THE BOOK. If you wouldn't eat lunch with the person in real life, why are you friends with them? If you'd eat lunch with them but the things they are currently saying piss you off? There is the Snooze for 30 Day Option. Hopefully when they are out of your time out jail, the opinion du jure has passed and they are back to posting flower photos.
Recently my son popped out of his room around 2:50 in the afternoon and asked if I had a minute. He then adjusted his shaggy hair in the mirror and tweaked his collar. Working from home, sure I have a minute. My coworkers used to just yell from the other room. Now they snore on the couch and occasionally pop out of their rooms in a college induced coma. I miss the old ones. The new ones are cool but I have to make lunch for them and listen to them bark about the squirrels.

Luke wanted a photographer. A photographer for yearbook photos. Photos that were due in ten minutes. I signed, stopped what I was doing and put on some slip on shoes and trudged up the hill. A clump of daffodils would have to do. I took a ton of photos until he was happy and then gave up my phone so he could take the ones he wanted & color correct.
He also has a license for Photoshop on his computer so he added a few things. In one photo, he added a tank tooling down Interstate 86 that you can barely see in the background. Now, these little Easter Eggs are way too small to see in general, but he knows they are there.

What a crazy time and crazy year. Who knew I'd be a yearbook photographer at this stage of my life!
A quick shout out to Tanya Leigh Designz who created those cool little tabs. I actually was pretty excited to work them in, even the little germ Covid which looks better in blue! The one bright spot too all this social distancing is that there has been an increase on the crafting side of things for me!
Who knew that you could play with sculpty clay ON a bottle? I discovered that a few posts back and then I wanted to try another bottle with round two. My plan was to glaze the bottle first and bake. Then add clay and bake again. It's hard to see the glaze, but it's a shimmery glaze. I used an opalescent one with some thinner. I haven't yet come up with a technique so you don't see the brush marks, but I don't doubt I'll eventually figure it out.

I worked on this while watching the last Star Trek Discovery Season 2 finale. CBS All Access offered a free month and I hopped on that band wagon so we could watch since it's still chilly here and alternating snow with rain. I have suggested to the weather that it would be much easier to quarantine with nice weather as then there is gardening and all that, but so far my appeals have resulted in more snow. THE MAN has purchased an old lady tv table for me to use and I've been making good use of it while watching tv in the evening. I'd rather be planting flowers, but I'll make them out of clay for now while waiting patiently for winter to actually be over.
I find that working with my hands in the evening keeps me off my phone. How one multi-tasks while watching a show, I don't know, but I seem to like to do it. Social Media is completely no fun these days and I've got my fill of virus related news/fake news/opinions on virus/opinions on (insert political party here) by breakfast time and perhaps even earlier if the news is particularly stupid. So, I'm thankful for that little table. And thankful that I am a craft hoarder and lots of things to play with.

Looking forward to Saturday when we do a virtual crafternoon! Who knew such things existed!

Happy Friday!
So I took a trip out the other day because I had to find a FedEx drop box. I haven't left the house in....oh weeks. Probably about three. It coincided with the fact that a local Cupcakery (another good word) reopened and I had heard through the grapevine that their cupcakes were heavenly. So in a show of support I put my big girl panties on and put on my N95 and went in to pick up my order.

I decided a couple of days back that pretty much if there isn't much to look forward to, maybe it was time to start enjoying the little things.

I really enjoyed looking forward to this cupcake today with an afternoon cup of tea. In a similar fashion, I was hankering to play with some vintage papers. I didn't even have a photo in mind but I found one from the stock pile of vintage granny photos that worked perfectly. I was in luck and Grandpa Ham was in it too! Love it! Makes me smile!

I am proud of myself for three big reasons this week. The first is that I got a training class out of the way for Civil Air Patrol. It was five hours on both Saturday and Sunday and I holed up in the camper and participated via webex. Then on Sunday, I cut THE MAN's hair. About 20 years back I cut his hair when we were first married and it did not go well. I did not wish to cut hair so I did it badly and consequently I freed myself up from years of haircuts. On Sunday, I wished to cut his hair. He has been going into work sporadically so I did not want him to look terrible. Patiently he let me cut his hair for about an hour. Smart people would not have tried to set up outside where it was windy. We both ended up wearing a lot of his hair but I can report he does look good. In fact, he was so impressed that he said it was a better haircut that he's gotten from his barber at times. This in a way is nice, but sometimes his barber who also does flooring gets distracted and misses a little. If he had said a better job than my hair person Kristen, I'd probably have fallen over. She's never missed a hair with her scissors no matter how distracted she gets.

My last thing that I am giving myself a high five over? It's really little and I feel silly to say. I was super nervous about going out at all much less going out in a mask. This is why there was a cupcake involved. Plus I ordered them so there was no backing out. In the ten minutes I wore a mask I almost forgot how to walk, talk, and breathe. But I did it and it was glorious when I got to take that mask off. Dear Lord how to do those medical people do it? I've worn those same masks for sheet rock (which is why I have any at all) and I already knew how much it would suck. Yup, sucked just as bad only I was more scared that I got some covid on me. I mean, sheet rock dust washes off....

So, more little things on the horizon for the rest of the week. I have a bottle to play with that I used some shimmer glass glaze on and a project plan to write with the boy, and more hostas to move into the new hill garden. Onward and upward over the Hump Day into the second half of the week!
Sheer boredom the other day prompted me to keep the syrup container out of the recycling after a french toast breakfast. Cute little bottle, but getting that label off was a bitch. Anyhow, I had this theory that I could play with some sculpty clay and molds and then bake the glass. Next trick is to use glass paint before and then the clay, but that is round two.

I wanted a way to test to see if you could just bake the clay on the glass and it wouldn't shrink too much and then fall off. So that clay is pretty much just pressed into the glass. After baking I used some metallic paint pens I had and some gold to accent. A coat of clear spray on the outside in matte and then gold spray inside.
I'm happy with the results. A worthy experiment from the recycling bin! Next bottle gets some glass paint (getting the spray paint to dry on the inside took forever) and then some clay.
I find that keeping my hands busy makes a little less manic these days. I can't even fathom how we get back to the daily routine of things & keep people, but thankfully that puzzle isn't mine to solve. So, the other day at lunch, we were talking about cars. I had forgotten I had one. Well, I mean I knew it was out in the driveway, but I haven't driven it since a Monday about three or is it four weeks back when I got the big pile of snow hurled at my windshield. I've walked past it a billion times because we've been working on our carport. (On a side note, a big plus of being home is eating lunch with your family instead of by yourself and with your phone at work. So, there is that...of course I also have to make that lunch...)

Anyhow, Luke and I were on our way back from Guthrie Hospital in Sayre because he needed to complete his FAA Physical for his private pilot shenanigans this summer. Despite what the weather app said about the weather of the day, was snowing heavily when we left. That would not have changed going out there as the application was time sensitive, so we had a lot of wet heavy slippery snow to deal with. I was driving like a snail because we passed cars off all over. As we headed under an underpass on the highway on the way back, whompppppP! A snowplow pushed this onto my windshield. As the snow fell from above, I thought oh, not again.

One of the places you don't want to go during a virus crisis is the hospital and the second thing you don't want to deal with is car crap. Lucky for me THE MAN has glass coverage on our vehicles as this is the SECOND TIME I've driven home with glass shards on my lap. The upside was that this time they were very minimal and not in my hair. On a side note, the windshield replacement was super easy and quick, with the exception they were not going to vacuum out your car due to the virus crap, which sounded like a decent policy to me.

Anyhow, taking about cars reminded me that I still needed to vacuum out my car after the incident. I was in luck as the snow from the previous day was all melted and it was actually kinda warm outside. THE MAN was wrapping up work on pulling the electric through conduit so we can get electric back into the carport so we hung out in the driveway together. It's only been say four years since we took out the lights & wiring but due to building the back wall, we were now able reinstall. The back wall was necessary so we could bring the wire up the back in conduit.

So while he worked on that project, I merrily vacuumed and wiped down the interior of the car. It was a bit of a time capsule. There was the concrete dust I wiped out of the back from when I ran those bags of concrete up to the Knoll so this dude could wrap up working on a storm drain. A flattened penny from the penny press at Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, which immediately brought me back to the Christmas party...and then, there was the thing under the seat. It took me a minute to identify it as a tomato from this past summer.

See, I had this big idea to grow tomatoes and to donate the extra to the food bank. I'd bring big baskets full to Civil Air Patrol because one of the Senior Members there runs the food bank in the Heights. I imagine that the offending tomato rolled there after some cadet was "ordered" to run out and grab those tomatoes from Lt. Pratt's car and transfer them to the white Chevy truck. These kinds of things make Cadets nervous because it's sketch, or so my Cadet tells me. So anyhow, I am sure in the swoooooop of the transfer, a tomato was dislodged and then subsequently lived under the passenger side seat for six months. Back this summer, my commute to work was five minutes and we had some nice hot weather, so it pretty much baked into a golf ball sized dried tomato in no time so it was more of a nice memory that I hurled over the bank and laughed about.
Easter is sneaking upon us, one flurry at a time here in the Twin Tiers of NY. I woke up to snow on the ground and the wind is whipping around. Good thing we can stay here all cozy with our slippers and play with the materials we have on hand. Who am I kidding. I am climbing the walls and wishing I had a huge painting project to play with. Also, I'm done with cozy, bring on the daffodils and outdoor grilling!

Anyhow, before I clear these off the work bench for another project, I have been wanting to try transfers on knobs for a long time and I had some spare knobs from the last dresser I worked on since I replaced them with some black ceramic ones.

Yes.....let's take a minute to appreciate that dresser that is older than me and now has some lovely new knobs, a new transfer, and some new clear coat.

Anyhow, back to the knobs...

I sanded the old worn down knobs and painted them white. I added some Lindy's Stamp Gang Milk Chocolate Brown Starburst mist to soften the white while they were still damp. Once they were dry, I then applied Prima Paris Garden transfers. The transfers were Amazon Prime and I picked the option to send them to me later as obviously art supplies are not a priority during a Pandemic.

One was still a little wet so the paint flaked off, which was perfect, adding to the otherwise shabby look!

I can't wait to find the right piece for these...when we're able to go back to hunting furniture & junkin!
As far as Easter goes, we are sheltering here in place at Pratt Inc. We sent some yummy Harry and David pears to the 'rents. Since I decided to do something nice a week before, I had to settle for the fact that everyone else probably had done the same thing. The only thing that would get there in time was Sympathy Pears! I decided that probably did fit the bill! My Mom reported they came with a big fancy sympathy card but it made them laugh just a little, which is cool. Laughing is good.

Holy sheep shit batman, it's been a long week. To be honest, it felt a lot more like a month. Everyone is getting used to working at home which while working at home always had it perks like wearing slippers, it's not as much fun without the right accounts, right equipment and a system to communicate. Our conference call system we use at work is enough to drive one batty as everyone is using it and the quality is horrible. For someone who wears hearing aids, nothing pisses me off more than not being able to understand someone. So, despite every other day check ins, it feels lonely.

To amuse myself, one night I painted some rainbow rocks. I outlined them the next day in between things. Turns out outlining is like fussy cutting something. You have to pay attention and you can't think about horrible things like what's happening everywhere with the virus. I follow at lot of rock groups on Facebook and this lady in Maine uses these super awesome pens for outlining so I got some months ago. I finally got to try them out for outlining on rocks and they do work awesome! The trick is multiple coats of Modge Podge to make it easy to glide over the words. I used glitter.

So, rock groups aren't the same as Rock Groups, fyi. People paint rocks, especially in arty little towns like ours & hide them for the kids to find. Well, and adults. I've found some myself and had private little happy dances. That heart one up there is a keeper. I found it on my anniversary back in February when you could go to stores. So, anyhow those rainbow rocks are hidden around a local park for the kids to find. I scooted out to grab some take out food yesterday afternoon and the park was on the way so "hid" them in plain sight. Speaking of arty little towns, our town has this ginormous glass building.
Corning Inc. just rehabbed B Building this past summer. For years they spelled out "NOEL" during the Christmas season by an elaborate system of leaving lights on in some offices and not in others. Since they went with glass windows that adjust to the light outside, the building itself has programmable glass and now can spell out whatever they can fit on the building. It was all over Bookface last night that they had switched it up. A local took this photo! Shout out to Carmen J. Narde for the great photo! We love our little town & it's shout out of hope.

Anyhow, it's time to get this rainy Saturday started. I can and will continue to use any words that have to do with bats in an effort to be funny and less bitchy. Let's hope it works. Stay safe friends!
Dear Lord that escalated quickly. By virtue of having New York City in our state, we're watching our numbers climb of infected people and county by county have cases. It's not looking good elsewhere either in the US either. What that means for me is that I've got two college kids home full time for the foreseeable future, I'm "working at home" without a work at home account on my personal pc but making it work transferring emails from my cell to my home email and trying to keep the grant I'm working on going. At some point things will eventually roll along to where we're actually administering it so I want it ready. I'm actually also really thankful to have this distraction of work and that we're all calling in a couple of days a week to stay connected.

THE MAN is holed up in the camper atm on a Saturday am conference call. He's been late getting home all week and due to the critical nature of what his plant makes, they are business as usual. Well, if you call screening people before entering the building for sickness, fever, etc. and a whole slew of prevention measures to keep people healthy at work normal. In the couple of times I've ventured out for critical type stuff, it appears we're not taking it seriously here. Aside from seeing parking spots on Market Street during the day, parking lots and streets appeared full. Freaking stay home already people!

I've already jumped up on a soap box here at home about that, yelled at my Mom who went out for a meeting, and I woke up at 4 am thinking of ways to decontaminate THE MAN before he comes in the house after work. Lexi says I need to chill out and rolled her eyes. I'm trying kid. I'm chill for big chunks of time. And then I'm not.

During one of those not good times yesterday I fussy cut a fairy. I cannot freak out during a fussy cutting fairy session and the brain calmed. So, today I thought, let's dust off the blog since I'm home talking to the dogs and holding down the fort. What, you thought I'd be talking to the kids? They only emerge for our new normal, afternoon tea. It's at 4:30 and involves actual tea and usually cookies. We watch the birds from the kitchen window because for some reason they are super active then. We've witnessed epic battles between chipmunks and our two doves that hang out. It's early spring, so the woodpeckers have temporarily converted to seed eaters and it's always exciting when one shows up and perches precariously on one of the little pegs. They are skittish so you have to be careful to not move around too much. We've even had a little "action" outside as it is springtime, which is also love time and make baby time. We've told the cardinal to "get a room" but he's still proceeding to fluff around to the point where he can't actually stand up. Typical man though, he's still trying to stuff his beak as he shows off. The lady cardinal isn't even sparing him a glance as she stuffs her beak. Some things never change.

So, anyhow back to art making and fairies. We had a quick play this last Sunday. It was a crafternoon because most of the guys were bowling and the girls needed something to do. We knew we were on the hairy edge of full blown staying at home and it might be one of the last times we could hang for quite some time. Teri provided the canvases and paint, I bought mac and cheese and we had a crumbly apple pie with ice cream. Comfort food and company.

We have been saying "everything is fine" a lot in our house lately. We've gone from a kid with two weeks of spring break who was supposed to go back to campus for lab at the end to a complete shut down. The other one had the same thing happen only his was overnight. On-line everything. One minute we're reduced down to a 50% work force, then 75% work force, then 100%, and then only essential business. It's rapidly evolving by the day, minute by minute, and one press release at a time.

I'll be hanging here for the foreseeable future and probably ramble on blogger every now and again. Don't hesitate to leave me a comment...it's a little quiet and it's nice to have a shout out now and again from a friend.

I won't lie. The end of this past year was overshadowed by a little niggling thought that would sneak up to do a tap dance in my brain from time to time, stomping on neurons which translated to my chest which would then tighten just a bit. Since the Pratt Inc. kids have taken their education seriously and are in the wholesale pursuit of getting as many credits as possible while living at home, we were then left with an atypical start time for the oldest to go off to college. Normally you'd have a whole summer to ease into the situation. Not us. A little less than a month and some of it while the oldest was in finals.

Making things worse was that everyone agreed that off campus living was the only way to go. THE MAN and Lexi had been to New Paltz twice and had toured the campus living facilities twice. The first time was in a sideways rainstorm and the second a sunny day. Transferring in as a second semester sophomore, they threatened to make her live with the freshman to get that "full college experience" and live in a dorm. Oldest wasn't having none of that biz. Her theory was that she skipped her Senior Year of High School and didn't need an "experience" as she'd had plenty of those already. Plus, she was still turned off by the previous "smells like teen spirit" tour.

Lucky for us there is an antiquated web page that one might use to figure out who had rooms available to rent in the the Town of New Paltz. The listing itself was fairly easy to use, but usually left out useful details such as location, how much the rent was, or anything resembling a photo. A month or so ago I called/texted as many of these people as possible and set up four places to look at. As it's a nearly four hour drive, we had to leave super early and come home super late.

First place we toured was this one. Yes those are very large birds on the top of that roof. To be exact, they are turkey vultures. Yes, if you had a small dog you'd be worried. They do look sketchy. The "room" was upstairs and in fact was slightly larger than my bathroom & had those slanted ceilings.
We practically ran out of that house in terror. Most of the rest weren't much better. Thankfully we found the 100 year old plus haunted mansion on the hill that John owns.

John Johnson (yes his real name) is a developer, which is why his haunted mansion is in the middle of a construction site. So yes not optimal unless you like those kinds of things like I do. Regardless, the room itself was huge & has an attached bathroom. Lexi who in general has a phobia of tooth brushes touching was thrilled. It also was the kitchen back when the haunted mansion was a three family rental, so she has a kitchen sink and a ton of cabinets.

Armed with dimensions of the unfurnished room (honestly after tours of "furnished" rooms this was much preferable) we then went on a mission to acquire a bed, mattress, and lamps. I found a fold up computer desk that could hold up to 800 lbs and that the local tile & carpet place sold cheap remnants and had someone that could bind the corners. Aunties and Grandparents sent help in the way of care packages and checks so in fairly short order she had the makings of a sweet pad.

Keeping in mind that John has a no pet policy....there is a house cat. Tuxedo believes himself to be the ward of Church Street proper and in particular King of the House. Nothing really happens without his participation. He is more than willing to lick his butt on your bed so you feel like you aren't missing your own pets as one of the services he offers. The door of the room across the hall doesn't quite latch so at night the owner locks himself in so Tuxedo doesn't take advantage of this and head butt the door open in boredom. A cat pounce at o dark thirty in a haunted house isn't a pleasant idea.

It was a two day marathon session getting her moved in and registered for classes. Being that she was living in a haunted mansion on a hill in the middle of a construction site, everything had to be carried up the back windy servant staircase since the front steps of the house really go to nowhere. Every now and then I'd feel that same niggling thought that she'd be staying and we'd be going...

We ended up spending quite a lot of time on campus and also meeting most of her housemates. They are all guys except the girl who just keeps her stuff there and lives with the boyfriend. The kid across the hall is minoring in Astronomy and is super interested in Astroplanets. The kid who lives down the hall is working on getting accepted to grad school and graduated with a degree in Astronomy already. I can only imagine the discussions they will get into, if everyone is around long enough in between jobs and classes. When we video chatted with her last night she was eating a bowl of soup that one of the guys in the house made and she told us about all the groceries she bought. I personally was wondering how the heck she found someone to cook for her already and was impressed. All my housemates from college couldn't even boil water.

Today she's going to walk to class and figure out the best route. She has healy sneakers on order and THE MAN has already voiced his concerns. He's pretty sure she'll crash and burn but I think she'll figure it out. Not to mention Zappos free return policy. When we drove off, my little sad niggling fear was gone. Somewhere between trips up those stairs, meeting the house mates and a little kitty love, I was confident that she's got this. Our new normal is a video chat in the evening and texting to keep up with her adventures will help. I guess I don't have to say reach for the stars...as she'll already be studying them!

So, the other day while shopping for my ReCreate It stuff, the lady at the counter who happens to know me quite well talked me into this super huge brass Persian tray. I completely missed it when I was shopping because it was covered up with other stuff. Now, I have a limit to how many trays I'm allowed to have and this was for sure one over my limit.

Last count put me at seven and I think I had my eyes closed when I was counting....they all require some kind of polishing at some point and are "decorations" in various places. However it was $5 and my MIL said WOW, good job, those are really expensive...and that one is Persian.

So, I decided later to use the rest of my ReCreative funds on a base. Low and behold this perfect black spindle base showed up with a wooden top for $15 and I decided to use that as the "legs" for the brass tray.

It was a pretty simple project and my only addition was really cleaning the legs & adding velcro so it would stay together unless you wanted to collapse the legs for storage.

Heck, I don't even know if they want two submissions, but like I told the assistant store manager, it's not staying at my house. It's super cute & all, but there is a limit to what I can bring home without getting divorced.

Hence I decided to shop for decorations so I can practice a bit more with some paper clay and molds and make something to decorate the top. I spent $5 between the pumpkin & the fake flower. Both I thought would be good candidates for adding some paper clay embellishments & flowers to.

Worked like I charm so I was then able to be brave enough to try it on furniture.
Here's the upside down top of that pot with a big paper clay molding added. The molds I got off Amazon and some appear to be for making things to go on top of cakes. Prima carries some as well.
I was pretty pleased how it turned out. The whole pot was spray painted black and then I added gold to the scallops. I removed the "plant" from the styrofoam and washed with the sprayer so now dust free, it was easy to add it back into the plant pot and then add some spanish moss with hot glue. Pretty cute for $1!
Lucky for me they let me participate! They gave me $50 in store product to make something fun. Here's what I bought the first time I went. The first thing I picked out was this $10 nightstand and that $15 hand painted lamp. I looked it over really well, but my only concern was that the bottom drawer was really tight. It sounded like it was stuck but that things were also stuck behind it. My concern with the lamp was that I probably wouldn't find a glass shade and it REALLY needed to be rewired.

There were a whole collection of things & garbage (not shown) behind the drawer which I discovered after I finally got both drawers out which took quite a bit of coaxing. The drawer itself I fixed with a bit of wax along the track and an orbital sander on where it was sticking. Sadly the necklace was cool but nothing epic!

The nightstand was very easy to paint. Probably because I cheated slightly. Let me tell you how. My before painting trick that is super easy is to wipe the surface down with a deglosser in lieu of sanding or stripping. My favorite stuff to use on old varnish is to wipe down the surface several times with Kleen Strip Deglosser. My current bottle is still going strong five or more years later and this product can easily be picked up at Home Depot or Lowes. After getting it all cleaned off and ready to paint I used plain old white Rustoleum spray paint on the top and silver on the bottom. I let the silver paint drift into the white and vice versa to get the two toned look. The paint I already had. Since this is a donated piece, I wanted to keep the cost down. I also wanted to keep the cost down to prove to you that you can make super cool things really cheaply with items you can buy at a normal hardware store.

You are curious about the flowers. They are part of a VERY LARGE transfer that is set up to work on a BIG HUGE DRESSER. My point is that I used three sheets and a very snippet of another and have A LOT of this transfer left.

It's made by Prima and is called Rose Celebration. I got mine off Amazon. See it's something they carry in stores IF you live somewhere you can find things like that. I do not. I live someplace that has a couple of hardware stores and then there is pretty much on-line shopping. The magic of transfers is that they completely can change the look of your project in about a half hour. It's literally like using a rub-off only it's much larger and more forgiving. There are five trillion Youtube videos out there showing you how to use transfers. I didn't watch one. I used the directions and the little stick thingie they included. It was easy. You just have to be patient and careful.

I bought a rewire kit for the lamp that was around $12 in Walmart because there is no way I wasn't rewiring the lamp. I can't have someone having their house burn down on my conscience! A rewire kit is generally around $12 at any hardware store. It also comes with the wires already stripped and generally directions. You pretty much just need to be able to read the directions & use a screwdriver. I had my husband check my work, because again, fire is bad. The bottom & top of the lamp base were sprayed with black spray paint and then I used some gold metallic luster paint to bring out the details.

The total cost in this project so far is around $60. Let's break that down.

$10 Nightstand

$15 Lamp

$5 Lamp Shade

$5 Wood Top

$35 in donated product

$12 Rewire Kit

$13 in Prima Transfers for the nightstand & round decorative piece

$25 that I spent

You may of noticed that I also made a round decorative piece that can get used with the lamp & nightstand. That was from my second trip to the ReStore where I picked up a very cheap brass Persian tray & a $15 table with a round beat up wood top. I did not take before photos of the top, but suffice to say it's much prettier now.

I'll be back with that project that didn't involve any painting. I did however use paper clay & molds. Check it out on the little glass bottle which isn't quite finished yet!

Happy Hunting for your bargain!

I had some really pretty water color paper & decided to show case THE CUTTING CAFE Easter files I was using by cutting them out in white and using the paper as a back drop. They are super simple yet really have an impact.

Take for instance this simple Egg with cut out flowers. It looks great with a little gold embossing power, some pink shimmer spray splotches and gems for the flower centers. This file is the Egg Shaped Card and a very simple cut.

Also in the file is this other egg that is all flowers. So pretty! I cut them out a wee bit too big for my card so I cut them down to fit and them added the gems, spray, and gold embossing.

And then there is this bunny file, made extra cool by adding the flowers from the previous file. He's from the Bunny Family Shaped file.

Of course I'm not a Clean and Simple (CAS) kind of girl, so everything got grunged up on the edges and I let some of the embossing power stay on the card to add a little extra gold shimmer.

Anyhow, fun times! Can't wait to get these in the mail!Mitraleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04498825521169653092noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2011936380845362530.post-40489727074190276532019-03-21T08:27:00.002-04:002019-03-21T08:29:37.411-04:00Kayla & Lexi Layout for THE CUTTING CAFE

Just popping in with a fun little layout where I used all kinds of goodies from FRIENDS, which incidentally is what this page is about! The unicorn sparkly strip of paper is from Lexi who is having fun these days with water colors and glitter modge podge. The card which is now a super cool graphic on this page is from my friend Lisa B. who is blogging. The calendar is from Regina over at THE CUTTING CAFE and is called the 2019 Folded Calendar. It's nice to use a little graphic like that so you can note what date the photo/photos on your layout where taken!

Super excited about that brick stamp too! It's embossed and is from Joy Claire! You'll be seeing more of that next month!

And there you have it! A layout made with all kinds of goodies from friends about friends!
Had a LOT of fun with this box! It's a great shape to play around with, especially if you have some pretty flowers to fussy cut! I made this box from THE CUTTING CAFE Pop Corn Box. I added a pretty copper handle to dangle some lace from.

I did struggle taking this photo though! We had a little bit of wind and the whole thing tipped right over! Had to go grab a weight to keep it from flying away! The vintage key is all glittery from SNOW, and not real glitter!
Freshly new fallen snow made this box a little difficult to photograph! I had to use a plate and balance my box on top of it, but I wanted the SUN so I could show off all the pretty colors! The coffee filters were dyed with an ink pad, spritzed with some shimmer spray and then modge podged on. The leaves were also from coffee filters. It's a nice paper to play with as it colors up well and is also translucent like washi tape. Love how this box turned out with it's vintage hardware and music paper!
Love the sunshine on the gold embossing power! So pretty! Can you tell it's a snapfish box? It held a bowl a week or two ago and was so nice and sturdy that I had to keep it to make it all pretty!
