Grandma Skip Hand Painted Posy Plates

My Aunt Caryl who is slowly sorting through my Grandma Skip's things passed along these dishes to me the other day. The oval one and brightly colored one were picked up at the second hand store ages and ages ago, but the others were painted by my Great Grandma.

My aunt also passed along some photos of my Grandma Skip from when she was younger. Can you see her peeking at you in the mirror? I need to get them framed up. They will look lovely near the vintage hankie quilt which has been completed and just needs to be hung. (You'll see it soon!)

These plates are so delicate and pretty! Makes me happy with their little gold edges and pretty soft roses! Thought I'd share some vintage on a Wednesday!

Happy Hump Day!

Waiting for the Great Pumpkin Card for THE CUTTING CAFE

I am going to need to give you a LIST of THE CUTTING CAFE files I used on this card I made for my Dad. He just had a birthday, turning 45 (ok so a few years off from that) and I wanted to give him a cool fall card. I was going for the water color/cartoon look so a lot of this card was inked up & then spritzed. They of course have a red door at their house and the porch is usually loaded with pumpkins from the garden...

The base of the card is a printable file called Autumn Sentiment Frames. I just printed it on craft paper and glittered it up. Built the rest of it right on top!  Next up was a printable called Harvest Wreath Greetings and I choose to use the cutting file included to make the door.

The pumpkins by Snoopy were colored with water color pencils and then glittered. They were in a printable file called Welcome Fall Printable Set. I have used this set OVER and OVER and OVER again! Love the leaves included with it!

And just to put you in the mood for THE GREAT PUMPKIN....

A little snippet from my childhood....

Happy Birthday Dad!

Me on a Monday & Secondhand Dog

So bare with me a smidge here. This post will be happy, then sad, and then happy again. And by sad, I mean I have already been sad enough for all of us and thought the whole thing through every single which way to Sunday...so maybe you can try not to be sad too. I don't mean to do it, but honestly have been keeping most of it in for better part of a month plus so let's rip the band aide off and get to it...

So, the last month has been rough. Rough from the stand point we started a new big project and have a pile of boards yet to go. I was out there today on the back side of the garage pulling nails and digging out the old metal so THE MAN could put up new boards. I also pulled out the old gross insulation and tried to not think too much about bugs, mouse turds, or how much it smelled. However, the sun was shining and I had a nice glass of ice tea. And progress! Things are looking pretty.

But that isn't the worst of it. I am starting to think of the whole thing partly as therapy. See four or five Mondays ago, our dog Patti started puking. By the next morning she was at the vets getting an IV to get her hydrated & some meds for nausea. The following morning when she still had not eaten, back down to the Vets she went. I let them take her away for another IV and to get her feeling better.

By that night they called us and told us that she was not going to make it. In a span of three days, we lost a beautiful young dog to liver failure & still have more questions than answers. The very fact I can write this means I have come a very long way. She left a huge paw print on our hearts and things haven't been quite right since.

But here is the happy part.

Her passing left us room in our heart and house for another pound puppy. Duncan P. Donut (his kennel name) wasn't our first choice when we visited the SPCA. He actually wasn't even a choice as his profile said he wasn't good with cats. We were there to see another dog. As the dog we were there to see was taken out of the kennel to visit with us, Duncan threw a shit fit complete with pawing the cage.

The lady helping us said Duncan had lived with cats, but they had recently tested him and he reacted to chipmunks so they felt it best to list him that way. We took him out second. He had a really awesome wiggle waggle to his butt and celebrated our presence by licking us quite a lot.

Turns out he was in jail for eating a floor. Having had a dog eat a couch, wall, orbital sander, office chair, too many socks and shoes to count, and open a plastic & metal kennel like a can opener, we weren't scared. Shortly there after, we welcomed Duncan to our house.

He is looking ashamed up there in the photo as he flunked sandbox. I took him down the road to a local doggy daycare that takes your pup when you are away and they play in a play yard. He was "too high energy" and will have to do some obedience training. THE MAN was less than impressed. We always get dogs that have a personality, he snorted.

As much as we thought Duncan was very similar to Patti with our first impressions, we were dead wrong. He reminds us much more of a boxer we had once and we think he's part boxer/lab with those big paws. He is also a lover. After his first vet visit, he had to say good bye to everyone in the office. Took me a half an hour to get out him out of there!

He already knows sit, stay, lay down, is potty trained, knows to leave the cat be, and loves tennis balls. He has also healed us a bit. I think our Patti sent us a 75 pound dog of pure gold. She also picked out a dog to keep the chipmunks in line. They were starting to get quite fresh. Wish us luck with our second hand dog, Dunk as they call him 'round here in these parts.

CAP: 1st Flight Layout for Another Freaking Scrappy

Anne over at Another Freaking Scrappy challenged us to make a page in AN HOUR. I would have been nervous but then I really am never positive how long something takes me. It's hard for me to commit an hour, but I can give all kinds of ten minutes here and there...So layouts for me are more like a soup simmering on the stove where you kinda add bits and bobs over the morning....

Anyhow, in THIS case, something woke me up at 6:30 am on a Sunday. That is way earlier that I normally wish to get up on a weekend, but then I thought it would be a good chance to give making a page in an hour a chance.

Well, mid way through putting the background papers down, the coffee pot dinged. That was after a small freak-out session where I couldn't find my adhesive. NEED COFFEE brain said.

Off I went. Glued some more stuff down...Then THE MAN showed up and wanted to talk about saws...

THAT was right before I sat down on my floor to sort though a huge pile of bits and bobs because I was planning on scrapping minus flowers. I was pretty sure I didn't have time to make my own flowers or even mists some leaves...

I did have time to cut out a couple sets of leaves and doodle green on the edges....Added some glitter & also traced my letters with a white marker...

I did also skip my normal grunge session where I add some paint and splatters....so it's a bit more minimalistic than normal....but the girls from our Crafternoon would say it had quite enough! ;-)

Are you up for a challenge? Come play along with us! And please please please tell me there is someone besides me on this planet that cannot spend an entire hour in one session on page!!!

I am glad to say though that I did finally get this page done! It's been around a month since Luke took his first flight for Civil Air Patrol. CAP is an auxiliary of the Air Force and part of the training is learning how to fly. Since I've never flown a plane, I'm quite jealous!

Happy Thursday!

Yale Bots

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...Ok so it was in Potsdam...THE MAN and I started putting these robots together from Yale locks. In fact I had written about them in a post called Getting to Know My Creative Process over a year ago.

And then we moved.

I just recently rediscovered them in the garage. THE MAN had carefully wrapped them up for moving so they were ready to rock and roll. I was totally in the mood to get working on them again!

I just hated the color....

I did however get my hands on a can of Krylon Chalky Finish white paint...and it seemed to me if I sprayed them with something similar to gesso, I'd be able to add some alcohol inks...

Which by the way worked.

Is it funny at all to you that THE MAN and I giggled the whole way through when we were gluing them together since we added real parts...Yes, they are anatomical. ;-)

I might also giggled when I added that dream big sticker under a glass & metal cap...

Fun times! These are making me happy! Happy Hump Day!

Wee Metal Box and Plaster Embossing: FOR LISA

Last week I was part of a blog hop over at Lori's Blog, ChouxChouxPaperArt. At one point I got asked how I embossed the top of a metal box I was giving away. Since it was a hop, I had focused more on the item than on how to make it!

I thought I'd remedy that here today!

Since it was a fine day for spray painting, I grabbed a recent spray paint find and went to town. My theory was that a chalky finish would work well for adhering plaster as well as spray painting a canvas as if it was gesso....but that is another project...My spray painting stump held both projects as they were drying..Any kind of spray paint would do as far as painting the metal box though. Just mainly something to cover the words.

Once the box is dry, grab your stencil & a credit card/scraper. Hold the stencil carefully and scrap on the plaster. Now, I don't go all fancy with my plaster. I'm just using the cheap kind you use to fill holes in the wall. ;-)

Let the plaster dry. Once it is dry, lightly sand it to take off the rough edges. Then ink up with whatever colors you want to use carefully. Just rub them right on. I happen to use Close to My Heart ink pads. I used a couple of different kinds and then smeared on gold paint with my finger and some glitter glue. The glitter glue adds a sparkle and makes the inks run a little.

Since it's plaster you have to work kinda dry or the embossed plaster will start to get sticky and it will smear.

As you can see on the flower, I glitter glued that too & also sprinkled clear glitter! In fact, it's not quite dry...but the sun was out and I took advantage of that for a photo! I added some vintage purple blooms and some ribbon!

Now, just as soon as I find a small box, this will be shipping off to Lisa so she can study it in real life. Maybe I'll send her some metal embossing tape...my second favorite kind of way to emboss metal boxes...

Linking up to the Halloween challenge over at ChouxChouxPaperArt!

Happy Tuesday!

Prepping the Cement & the Copper Leaf Fountain

Sometimes it's a treat to walk into a home improvement store and walk out with a product that fully meets your expectations! A couple of weekends back I found this new to me product and it worked amazing to seal this cement planter.

I also "borrowed" that fancy duct tape from my kid because all projects are more fun with pretty stuff! It was really easy to mask off & apply since it was in a spray can. Now, making the fountain was a bit more difficult...involved drilling holes in rocks...

I found a metal leaf that I had not used here at the new house and spray painted it a copper color. Then we went to work finding some rocks around the house and drilling holes in them.

A pump from the same home improvement store and a little silcone to hold all the rocks/bricks together...and I'm moving water!

I'm pretty pumped! It's not as amazing as some fountains I've seen on on-line, but it's my first!

Happy Tuesday!

Of Mice, Men, and Wood Boring Bees

Today is the first day of Fall in my neck of the woods. As eagerly anticipated that summer was, I'm ready to slide back into the routine. We of course have started another project. We are in the process of ripping some of the sheet rock & insulation out of the garage. Now, this is a bit counter intuitive. Usually you'd want to have something insulated! However, the mice have taken up residence and the garage did not have any ventilation so also had a funk about it. Funk removal has commenced because we like to hang out in the garage. (We have projects that need spray painting and winter is coming!)

We have a pile of rough cut wood that we'll be using as siding. Can you see it there just inside the door? THE MAN bought it from an Amish guy who sawed it up for him special.

I think changing it up to wood will add to the whole cottage look of the place. All the metal siding will be recycled and old windows donated to the ReSTore, so it's all good. The wood boring bees and the mice are quite disappointed. One wall at a time we are destroying their condo! The morning he took the insulation & siding off the first wall there was a passle of them with little picket signs squeaking HELL NO WE WON'T GO. They made for the hills after a hawk showed up.

We are using the board & batten method. Those are just the boards. Later, THE MAN will nail thin strips up between them to cover the crack. Come spring the whole garage will get stained.

Wish him luck...he's moving on to the front this weekend!
