Christmas Cards Ignacio Style

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE Nice Crane. Seriously.

Ignacio at Nice Crane Designs makes me so happy when he puts new images in his store!

I used a very vintage Christmas image (see it up in the corner) to make my cards.

I printed many at a time for my card fronts using Picasa (a free download from Google) and slide them under some card stock using a circle cutter.

I actually made these in a very short amount of time due to having the image all printed!

Stop over if you love vintage images. There are TONS in his store!

Happy Tuesday!

Back in the Swings of Things: Drafting Table Update

If you recall, a while back I blogged about this drafting table I had and tackling a large painting job right before Christmas.

I still haven't put up the tree yet...

Which makes me wonder if I was somehow using this project to procrastinate...is such a thing possible???

Anyhow, we all know how important a work surface is to the crafter.

Mine had a burn hole in it and was bumpy from not washing off various things like modge podge and paint. It was really a train wreck.

I also wanted to add a little strip of molding at the bottom to hold a washable cutting mat.
Now, I am a lucky girl as THE MAN has all sorts of fun tools in his garage. After a large amount of sanding to get a nice surface on the top and the legs ready for paint, I was then able to spay on my first color and basecoat of cream.

Now, I don't think you'd need to necessarily spray the entire project, but in this case there was a lot of sanding and it is older, so it gave the whole thing a nice even basecoat. I was planning on sanding off the black too, so wanted to make sure I got a nice contrast for the edges and a distressed look.

Here is a close up of the little molding strip I added and also painted a patina green.

It took at least two weeks from sanding to final coat of clear on the top, so plan for your area to be down for quite a while! Might want to plan on setting up alternative work surfaces. I used a nice clear coat over top of my sanded edges to make sure they stayed looking old and I had something easy to wipe off dust & over spray.

And a side shot of my table. It makes me happy every time I walk by...

The molding strip holding the cutting mat will really help me behave with items that are wet like paint and mists. Plus, putting all this time and effort into something makes me plan on being a whole lot nicer to it! We originally picked it up at a sale for $20 and I now have almost double in that in paint, not to mention sweat equity, so I think I will behave.

Happy Monday!

Sleepy Time Tea Boxes & THE WINNER!

These little tins came in my tea. We drink a lot of Sleepy Time Tea here. For some reason, my son has to have a cup every morning or coco. It's a rough life around here.

I liked the green color, but wanted to make it my own. :-)

So added some embossed tin tape. And added some cream paint. Sanded, painted, added some gold, added some glitter and then some shimmery paint.

Basically got all crazy until I really liked how the top turned out!

Then I made those little metal crackle accents with some vintage images of flowers and some gems with pearl brads!

LOVE IT!!!

These little boxes are heading out with a treat for some friends via the post office. I will be sad to see them go, but I really enjoyed working on them!

And the winner of the hop yesterday at Visions of Sugar Plums is:

1 set of choice from Paper Sweeties: Sarah Biswabic
1 set of choice from Moonlighting by Mary: Karen Letchworth
Christmas Creation from Mitra: Sue D.

Sue:  Shoot me an e-mail (it's listed on my sidebar) and I'll get this my little house into the mail to you on the double!

Happy Friday!

Visions of Sugar Plums Day 4: MY GIVEAWAY Altered Chest of Drawers

Metal makes me happy. So does lace and when you add modge podge into the equation, I get a bit crazy. Lets not even talk about glitter.

PLUS, I get to give this project away! MOST EXCELLENT!

I'm hanging with the peeps over at Visions of Sugar Plums today and I'm blogging about another altered item. This is Day Four of their blog hop full of crafts, recipes, traditions, tips, and wonderful, wonderful prizes.

To win this item and others you just need to visit & comment on all the blogs listed below!

Lori
Mitra (Here!)

Giveaways:  1 set of choice - Paper Sweeties
1 set of choice -  Moonlighting by Mary
Christmas Creation - Mitra - THAT is ME!

This little box with the drawers was found at my local Op Shop. Yes, I am perfectly aware we do not call them that in the US, but hey, anyone reading this blog from Australia will know that I mean OPPORTUNITY SHOP. I love that. I feel full of opportunity when I walk through the door at Best Friends in Potsdam. It's a second hand store run by the local animal shelter, so it makes me extra happy to hand them some cash for the pooches.

Here is the before photo. I only painted the main part of the house green as I liked the crackly paint on the drawers.

One of my favorite parts of this project was modge podging on that very thick antique lace and adding those Tim Holtz buttons to the front.

Another little shot of the bird and buttons.

And one last shot of my pretty real copper roof. I used real copper and ran it through my Big Shot to emboss it. Then painted it with a patina paint. Hope you like it and WIN IT!
Leave me a little message and get in the drawing!

Happy Thursday!

Alright, you are pretending to be with me. That is OK. ;-)

Giveaways:  1 set of choice -  Moonlighting byMary
1 set of choice - Iralamija
1 set of choice - Paper Sweeties

And this project I am posting today was made especially for this week long blog hop!

I wanted to you show you a project where I combined something recycled with a new item and completely changed it up with paper blooms!

So, the black house part you see was previously hanging with a different clock in my friend's house. It was stained pine and in the pocket at the bottom, there were pine cones. She got tired of it, so passed it along.

I liked it, but I thought it needed a new coat of paint, some distressing, and a new clock.

I sprayed it black and then distressed the edges with a sander.

The clock itself was purchased at Walmart for around $10. It originally came with a metallic frame, but I carefully took the clock apart to repaint that a patina green. It was pretty the way it was, but there wasn't enough contrast against the black paint.

I then reassembled it and added some rolled roses I made and glittered up.

These hybrid type projects really make me happy. You then have something very original, recycle something, and also personalize it!

Happy Hopping and thanks for stopping in!

Mitra

Story Telling Sunday: Trotting Through Lima by Bruce Mero

This story accompanies a page I posted yesterday.

Trotting Through Lima:  By Bruce Mero

Readers of this author may remember an episode I wrote about wherein I relived a terrifying event from a number of years back in Kerman, Iran, when I lost control of my innards and "soiled" myself. Well...it ALMOST happened again when Gretchen and Mitra and I were in Peru a few months ago. Déjà-vu? Nearly.

It was the final day of our trip, of course. We had been in Lima earlier  for an overnight, then off to Cusco, Machu Picchu, back to Cusco and then back to Lima for a half-day city tour before our return on a red-eye flight to the States. The milk-colored skies of this huge city built on large sandy cliffs abutting the ocean reminded us of a cool, sunless Los Angeles.  An annoying, giggly, horn-rimmed be-speckled , young tour guide was our host for a quick tour of urban Lima, followed by Colonial Lima. All was fine for the bus trip along the coast and the walk through the Mira Flores market was colorful and educational, though most of us had to pee by the time we were back in the bus.

We ate a fabulous lunch at Lima's premier restaurant, Puro Peru, where I probably should have taken the opportunity, but instead was flabbergasted by the urinal in the men's room and forgot about my other end. The urinal was a long trough, ornately tiled and filled with polished black pebbles, on top of which had been spread a layer of sliced limes. One peed on the limes and the whole room was odorless! One of the guys in our group was so impressed he went back to the table to get his camera for a photo.

By the time we entered historic Plaza de Armas though, the magnificence of the Spanish Colonial architecture represented in the buildings surrounding the square was beginning to look a bit foggy to me. My attention began to center on the uncomfortable gastronomical rumblings from my lower regions. The Cathedral of Lima was next on the tour with its magnificent, towering, gold-encrusted altar and voluminous sanctuary, the beheaded remains of Peru's conqueror, Pizarro and a lot more stuff. Monks chanted ethereally in the background. All blurred as I focused instead on locating a non-existent public comfort station. The Cathedral tour was then followed by an interminably long and surreal trip through the catacombs beneath the building where we saw the bones of every one of the 20,000 burials therein, or so it seemed. I was surreptitiously looking for a dark corner somewhere if I might leave the group for a few moments. No such luck.

Next was a short walk to the oldest, elegant Spanish colonial house in Lima, belonging to the family of Pizarro's scribe, Jeranimo Aliaga. I took our bubbly tour guide aside and in Spanish told her that I was in need of a restroom. She seemed to understand, but began addressing the group and describing the history of the house. I again took her aside and tried to express the urgency of my situation. As a courtesy, I spoke in Spanish. She walked into another room and began to discuss the paintings. I took her aside for third time at an opportune moment and expressed to her in no uncertain terms and in English this time the urgency of the situation and just what was about to happen if I did not find a restroom immediately. Apparently, this got her attention and she disappeared into another room. She quickly returned  and told me that the restroom was beyond the room she'd just been in but that it was unavailable. The anteroom was under renovation, the floor had just been stripped and varnished.

In desperation, I opened the door and encountered a man and women who were re-finishing the floor. I pleaded my case in Spanish and English and evidently convinced the couple of the impending disaster. They both pointed across the room to another door and nodded. My shoes stuck to the curing varnish and once or twice I skidded as I headed for the door and the bathroom beyond.

          Ahhhhhhhhh!

I was a bit sheepish on my return through the anteroom and thanked both workers as profusely as my limited Spanish would allow. Both were laughing as I left. I was aware that I'd left footprints in the sticky varnish on both of my trips across the room.

No one had missed me as I returned to the group. Gretchen was busy taking photos of stained glass doors and Mitra was admiring the ornate carvings in the wainscot. The woodwork, the artwork, wall and ceiling treatments and tile work in each room were so overwhelming and beautiful that no one in our group had recognized my distress nor my departure. The tour had continued without me. I am certain, however, that someone would have noticed had I not found that restroom precisely when I had.

Aliagra House Page for Another Freaking Scrappy

What fun! The latest challenge has gone live over at Another Freaking Scrappy and it's super cool!

Scrap a generation layout. Perhaps you have a photo of you and a parent, or a 3 generation photo of
you, a parent and grandparent. Do you have a momento given to you that belonged to an ancestor that
you could incorporate in the layout either by placing the object itself or a photo of it in the layout??
Journal, if you wish, something appropriate for your layout. Thank you to Sandra Scott, who plays along with our challenges regularly, who suggested the theme of this challenge.

Now, my page fits into this challenge in two ways.

First, this page contains a photo of my father and I waiting to enter the Aliagra House in Lima, Peru.

Secondly, this house has been lived in by 18 generations of the SAME family.  Here is what the NYTimes has to say:

The Aliaga House is as old as Lima itself. When conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded the capital city on Jan. 18, 1535, he gave the plot adjacent to that of the Government Palace to his trusted ally Jerónimo de Aliaga, so they could be neighbors. Eighteen generations of the Aliaga family have resided in the same mansion ever since — it's been renovated continuously, but it's the oldest house in the Americas.

Our fabulous girl guide (more about her tomorrow) said that this dude was the scribe to Pizarro and seemed to indicate that Pizarro had difficulty with reading & writing, making him seriously powerful. His house was holy cats amazing.

Tomorrow, I will tell you a really funny story about our visit to this house and my Dad. I will be linking up to Story Telling Sunday with Sian, so you'll have to check back. Let's just say we are lucky we did not get kicked out of the oldest house in Lima.

A close up of my blooms. The little dolls were bought from a small person in the square in Lima, so I had to include them. A lovely gold flower sent to me from Helen and some Lizzy Hill blooms in there too! Vintage lace collar for the background, love how that stands out against the black.

My letters were a lot of fun. They started off as plain canvas and I messed around with some perfect pearls. Do not ask my why I thought polka dots. Just seemed like the thing to do. ;-)

Check out this challenge, play along if you will and come back tomorrow with some coffee for a good story and a laugh.

Happy Saturday!

Kermit the Frog

With thoughts of Christmas right around the corner, I bravely started a new project.

It makes perfect sense. Instead of putting up my tree, I am sanding.

This lovely tall (don't actually use the stool) table was obtained at a sale of office furniture and goes back to the time of real life drafters & designers I believe. I have however done my best to ruin it.

That black spot is me catching the table on fire with the embossing gun. Mine is a real life guy's gun from a hardware store, so it's a bit...um....powerful.

Honestly though, it is supposed to be in the 50ties this weekend and I have a hot date with a sprayer!

I have been sanding for two nights and the top looks amazing.

My intent is to spray it black so it matches this other piece I have in my scrappin' area and painted up over the summer.

Wish me luck! This time I have buy off from THE MAN, so I'm in the clear there at least!
And why Kermit? Lizzy C. sent me the COOLEST LINK yesterday. I almost peed my pants watching it. I didn't win the lotto, but this youuuuuu tube video helps ease the pain!

Happy Friday! Back soon with my post for Another Freaking. It's the FIRST again!

Mug Shot Page for ScrapFriends Color Challenge

Did you know that lottery winners never get stressed out? I wouldn't know. But, a coconut didn't hit me in the head either and I'm thankful for that!

I was cleaning the top of my desk the other day and came across my duplicate passport photo and it made me laugh. A nice close up shot so you can laugh too.

I mean, I knew it was terrible at the time. And it's still terrible.

It was a rough rough summer. Peru at the end of it was perfect. Getting to that point, a roller coaster.

The nice lady at the Post Office was on her second attempt to take this photo after calming me down. I had three whole seconds to devote to getting my passport and had forgotten to bring checks me with.

The town I was getting the passport in was a war zone, so it was a miracle I made it there at all.

Anyhow. I thought I need to share it with the world. Or at least the folks at ScrapFriends using their color challenge image!

YES, I know green isn't in that color combo.

Shoot me. I'm not a lotto winner. I thought the green would cheer me up. ;-)

Besides Karen Wray gave me that yummy Prima Rose paper fifteen trillion years ago and it was time to use it.

Lizzy Hill gave me that delicious Manor House flower and I bet she bought them at ScrapFriends.

They are INKABLE & MISTABLE which is why it's that lovely shade that matches and all glittered up from this AWESOME SAUCE GLITTER spray that Helen sent me.

Catch you tomorrow. I have a CRAZY project to show you tomorrow. PROOF I am nuts.

Is it Friday yet?

Put the Lime in the Coconut

I am YOUUUUUUU Tubing right now.

I had to look up the Put the Lime in the Coconut song. It is stuck in my head now so don't blame me if it gets lodged in yours. For crying out loud, it's older than I am by a couple of years. It deserves to be played...

I am thinking about coconuts as in the kind that fall off the tree and onto your head.

We do not have coconut trees in upstate NY.

So, I would think it would be very hard for me to get hit in the head with a coconut.

I am going somewhere with this really.

Anyhow, Power Ball is up to 500 million dollars. It's the second largest in history.

Yes, I played and I am pretty sure I am the winner.

So, my friends...........................

Get ready to PARTY IN VEGAS! I will pick you up on my jet. Lizzy Hill lets make biscuits.

They said on TV your chances of getting hit in the head by a coconut are greater than winning lotto.

Regardless, I have faith. Better be nice to me today. I'll be rich tomorrow.
